BART Service Resumes After Equipment Issue Disrupts Bay Area Commute

BART Service Restored Following Morning Disruption

Updated February 26, 2026 / 9:10 AM PST – Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) service between Oakland and San Francisco has fully resumed operations Thursday morning after a significant equipment issue caused widespread disruption to the morning commute.

Service Interruption Details

Around 8:30 a.m., BART announced a complete halt to service between the West Oakland and 24th Street Mission stations, crucially including the Transbay Tube. The agency attributed the stoppage to a “network engineering problem,” leaving thousands of commuters scrambling for alternative transportation options.

BART officials urged riders to seek alternative routes while crews worked to resolve the issue. By 9:00 a.m., the good news arrived: service had been restored. However, riders were advised to anticipate residual delays as the system was brought back to full operational capacity.

Current Status: BART service has resumed between West Oakland and 24th St. Mission. Expect residual delays systemwide as service is re-established.

Recent Transbay Tube Issues

This latest incident follows a similar disruption on Sunday, when the Transbay Tube was shut down for several hours due to damage to communication cables. That outage forced thousands of commuters to rely on buses and other forms of transportation to cross the bay. The Sunday outage was traced back to a fire at a nearby homeless encampment, specifically an RV fire near the West Oakland station.

While the cause of Thursday’s disruption is different, BART officials have not yet determined if there is any connection between the two incidents. Investigations are ongoing.

Impact on Commuters

The disruptions highlight the vulnerability of the Bay Area’s transportation infrastructure and the significant impact even short outages can have on the daily lives of commuters. BART is a critical artery for the region, and any interruption to service can cause cascading delays throughout the Bay Area.
