Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2026: The Nominees Are Here!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its impressive list of 17 nominees for the class of 2026, showcasing a remarkable breadth of musical talent. This year’s selection spans genres, from rock and R&B to hip-hop and pop, reflecting the evolving landscape of music and its enduring impact on culture. Among the contenders are iconic figures like Phil Collins, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, and international sensations Shakira and Sade, alongside heavy metal giants Iron Maiden and the groundbreaking Wu-Tang Clan.
A Genre-Bending Lineup
This year’s nominees demonstrate the Hall of Fame’s commitment to recognizing the diverse influences that have shaped rock and roll. The list includes Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, Pink, New Edition, and the influential British band INXS. Notably, Billy Idol and Joy Division/New Order return to the ballot after being overlooked in previous years. Adding a touch of sibling rivalry, The Black Crowes and Oasis – both known for their musical prowess and public family feuds – are also in the running.
Musical Titans and Trailblazers
Several nominees boast impressive legacies. Phil Collins, renowned for hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night,” has garnered eight Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1985. Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains a landmark achievement, being the first hip-hop album to win the coveted Grammy for Album of the Year in 1999. Mariah Carey, a perennial chart-topper with 19 #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and Sade, celebrated for her smooth jazz-infused hits like “Smooth Operator,” are also strong contenders.
The Wu-Tang Clan, hailed as innovators in the rap world since their 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang, bring a unique energy to the ballot. INXS, who dominated the late 1980s with anthems like “Need You Tonight,” and Iron Maiden, pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, represent the rock foundations of the nominees.
First-Time Nominees and Lasting Impact
Ten artists are on the ballot for the first time, including Jeff Buckley, whose critically acclaimed album Grace continues to inspire, and Luther Vandross, a soul music icon who sold over 25 million albums. The inclusion of Pink and Shakira further highlights the Hall of Fame’s embrace of contemporary artists who have left an indelible mark on the music industry. Sadly, both Buckley and Vandross are being considered posthumously, a testament to their enduring influence.
As John Sykes, chair of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, stated, “This diverse list of talented nominees recognizes the ever-evolving faces and sounds of Rock & Roll and its continued impact on youth culture.”
The Road to Induction
The 2026 inductees will be announced in April, alongside those recognized under the Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award categories. To be eligible, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior. Voting will be conducted by a panel of over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. Last year’s inductees included Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, and Soundgarden, demonstrating the Hall of Fame’s commitment to celebrating a wide range of musical legacies.
