Julius Randle’s Performance Dip: Timberwolves Coach Reveals ‘Severe’ Illness
The Minnesota Timberwolves suffered a significant loss against the Philadelphia 76ers, and a key factor in their struggles was the unusually quiet performance of forward Julius Randle. The game, which ended with a score of 135-108 in favor of Philadelphia, saw Randle post only 18 points, a stark contrast to his usual impactful contributions.
Randle’s stat line was particularly concerning, registering just three rebounds and three assists. For a player who typically functions as a central hub for the Timberwolves’ offense and a crucial defensive presence, this showing was undeniably subpar. He finished with a -20 plus/minus rating in 31 minutes of play, and struggled from beyond the arc, making only one of his five three-point attempts.
‘Under the Weather, Pretty Severely’
Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch shed light on the reason behind Randle’s diminished performance. According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic (formerly reporting on X), Finch stated that Julius Randle was “under the weather, pretty severely” during the game. This explanation provides context for the statistical anomaly and suggests his performance wasn’t indicative of his usual capabilities.
The Timberwolves were already facing challenges with key players sidelined. Star center Rudy Gobert was serving a suspension following a Flagrant Foul, and Sixth Man of the Year contender Naz Reid was out due to injury. Philadelphia’s physicality further exacerbated the situation, forcing 21 turnovers from the shorthanded Wolves, with Randle contributing two and Anthony Edwards accounting for seven.
Physicality and Turnovers Plague Timberwolves
“They were physical, they’re good defensively, they’re super handsy, they’re active in the gaps,” Finch explained. “We fought the game. We went into traffic, we didn’t get off the ball early enough. All the things that happen when you play in a crowd.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the loss, the Timberwolves (35-23) remain in a competitive position in the Western Conference. Losses by other contenders allowed them to maintain their proximity to the third seed and retain control of the sixth seed. The team will need a healthy Julius Randle to continue their push for playoff positioning.
