IndiGo Cancels Pune-Bangkok Flights: What Passengers Need to Know

IndiGo Suspends Pune-Bangkok Route for Summer Schedule

Passengers planning to travel between Pune and Bangkok this summer will face fewer options as IndiGo has announced the cancellation of its flights on this route, effective March 29th. Both Pune to Bangkok and Bangkok to Pune services have been removed from the airline’s schedule for the upcoming season.

Why the Cancellation?

While IndiGo has not publicly stated a specific reason for the cancellation, aviation experts suggest a strategic reassessment of international routes is likely underway. According to Dhairyashil Vandekar, an aviation analyst, the airline may be prioritizing routes with greater commercial potential. “Airlines are constantly evaluating their network to optimize aircraft deployment and maximize profitability. This could mean shifting resources to routes that offer a better return on investment,” Vandekar explained.

Impact on Travelers: Air India Express Remains the Sole Operator

Prior to this announcement, both IndiGo and Air India Express operated flights connecting Pune and Bangkok. With IndiGo’s withdrawal, Air India Express will now be the only airline serving this route. This reduction in competition has raised concerns among frequent flyers like Vinay Sawant.

“Having only one airline on a route limits passenger choice and can potentially lead to increased ticket prices,” Sawant stated. “Competition is crucial for maintaining affordable fares, and the lack of it could negatively impact travelers.”

Growing Demand vs. Route Adjustments

The cancellation comes at a time when there’s increasing demand for expanded international connectivity from Pune. The recent opening of a new terminal at Pune Airport had fueled expectations of increased overseas services. However, experts caution against interpreting this decision as a sign of the route’s poor performance.

Vandekar emphasizes that airlines routinely assess route performance based on seasonal demand, seat occupancy, and profitability. “Route changes and cancellations are standard commercial decisions. An airline might redeploy aircraft to a more lucrative route, even if the existing route isn’t necessarily operating at a loss.” He also points out that Air India Express already benefits from a favorable flight schedule, operating the Pune-Bangkok route during the day, which is generally preferred by passengers.

Future Outlook

Vandekar remains optimistic about the future of international connectivity from Pune. “If demand increases, IndiGo or other airlines could easily reintroduce services on the route. Air India Express already has a strong foothold and is well-positioned to capitalize on the current situation.”
