Shakira to Grace Mexico City’s Zocalo with a Free Concert

Colombian superstar Shakira is set to return to the iconic Zocalo, Mexico City’s main square, after nearly two decades! The performance, a grand finale to her historic Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour in Mexico, will be a free concert on March 1st. The announcement came via a short video posted on Shakira’s social media channels on Friday, February 20th.

“¡México lindo! Do you remember 2007 when I sang for you in the Zocalo? Today I want to tell you that that experience is going to happen again this Sunday, March 1st, at 8:00 PM,” Shakira shared excitedly. “You have given me so much, so much, and I hope I can give back a little of that affection you have shown me.”

A City Celebrates Shakira’s Return

Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, amplified the announcement with a video featuring herself alongside Daniel Concenzo, President of Grupo Modelo, the concert’s sponsor. “Shakira is an extraordinary Latin artist who has triumphed worldwide, and we love her very much here in Mexico,” Brugada stated.

Shakira also announced, “I will be broadcasting part of the show live on my channels, for all those who want to join this celebration.”

Global Stage for the Latin Superstar

Beyond the Zocalo, Shakira is slated to perform at another globally renowned venue: Copacabana Beach in Brazil on May 2nd. Organizers anticipate a crowd of at least one million people, mirroring the success of Madonna’s 2024 and Lady Gaga’s 2025 performances there.

A Historic Tour and Record-Breaking Success

The Zocalo concert will cap off a remarkable series of performances across Latin America, beginning in March 2025, encompassing 31 dates and 12 shows at the Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City. Prior to her Mexico City appearance, Shakira will perform in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas on February 21st and Mérida, Yucatán on February 24th.

Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour has shattered records, earning a Guinness World Record as the highest-grossing tour of all time by a Hispanic artist, with an astounding $421.6 million in revenue and 3.3 million tickets sold across 86 shows, according to Billboard Boxscore. Billboard reports on the tour’s success.

The Zocalo: A Historic Venue

The Zocalo is a historically significant public square, a convergence point for politics, social movements, culture, and religion. It’s the second-largest public square in the world, surpassed only by Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Shakira first performed at the Zocalo on May 27, 2007, drawing a crowd of 210,000 people, exceeding the previous record of 170,000 set by the Mexican rock band Café Tacvba in 2005.

Currently, the attendance record for the Zocalo is held by the Argentine band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, who attracted 300,000 people on June 3, 2023. Grupo Firme follows closely with 280,000 attendees in 2022.
