Capital One Arena Undergoes Massive $800 Million Transformation
The Capital One Arena is entering a new era with an ambitious $800 million renovation project, promising a dramatically improved experience for fans of the Washington Wizards and Capitals. Work on the arena’s exterior is now highly visible, with temporary changes in place to facilitate the extensive overhaul. This project isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a comprehensive upgrade designed to enhance every aspect of a game day, from arrival to departure.
What’s Changing at Capital One Arena?
The renovation, slated for completion by 2027, will deliver significant improvements to fan amenities and circulation. Monumental Sports & Entertainment leaders have emphasized a focus on creating smoother experiences for attendees. Here’s a breakdown of what fans can expect:
- Expanded Concourse Space: Expect wider concourses, increasing space by 6-8 feet, reducing congestion and improving flow.
- More Amenities: The project will nearly double the number of concessions and increase restroom capacity by 40%.
- New Team Store: A 10,000-square-foot team store will provide fans with a wider selection of merchandise.
- Improved Accessibility: More escalators and elevators will enhance accessibility throughout the arena.
- Enhanced Entrances & Exits: A new main entrance, closer to the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, will open in fall 2026. Sidewalks on F Street, 6th and 7th streets will be widened.
Current Construction Phase & Temporary Changes
As of late 2025, exterior construction has ramped up, involving the removal and replacement of the building’s outer shell and existing LED boards. This phase necessitates temporary changes for eventgoers, including:
- Overhead Protection: Installed near the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station entrance.
- Exterior Scaffolding: Being erected around the building.
- Street Closures: F Street will be closed to pedestrian traffic on event nights, with the street serving as a walkway.
- Detour Signs: Guiding pedestrians around construction zones.
“People’s experience starts when they leave their homes, and we don’t want it to be stifled by a long line or tight concourse,” said Jordan Silberman, Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s president of venues. Construction is strategically planned to minimize disruption, primarily occurring during off-peak hours.
A Long-Term Investment in Washington D.C.
The renovation project is partially funded by D.C. taxpayers, stemming from a 2024 agreement with Mayor Muriel Bowser to ensure the Washington Wizards and Capitals remain in the city. Monumental Sports & Entertainment anticipates hosting an average of 250 events annually once the renovations are complete. The arena will be closed for the next two summers to allow for major construction work.
Jim Van Stone, president of business operations for Monumental Sports & Entertainment, noted that much of the initial work was “behind everyone’s eyes,” focusing on expanding event-level spaces within the Gallery Place Mall. However, the current exterior work is highly visible, marking a significant step in the arena’s transformation.
