Coach Jay Johnson’s Perspective

“We’re happy to be here in Jacksonville, it’s a beautiful ballpark,” said Coach Jay Johnson. “I think there’s an advantage to getting out of town and playing on the road, because there aren’t so many things going on outside of baseball, and that’s a positive. If you’re going to have a successful year, you’re going to have to be successful away from home, so this is a good opportunity for us against some very good teams this weekend. It’s an opportunity to learn more about our team and try to put our players in a position to win.”

Tigers’ Hot Start

LSU kicked off the 2026 season with a dominant three-game sweep of Milwaukee and followed it up with a 10-7 win over Kent State and a decisive 12-1 victory over Nicholls. The team’s 15-5 win over Milwaukee marked their 25th consecutive victory in a season opener.

Players to Watch

  • Jake Brown (Jr., RF): Named Baseball America National Team of the Week, hitting .529 with 4 home runs and 10 RBI.
  • Gavin Guidry (R-Jr., RH): Returning from injury, Guidry has been dominant in relief, allowing just one hit in 4.1 innings with 10 strikeouts.
  • Cooper Moore (Jr., RH): Also named Baseball America National Team of the Week, Moore struck out a career-best 11 batters against Milwaukee.

Dominant Pitching Staff

The LSU pitching staff has been a force to be reckoned with, recording 49 strikeouts in the Milwaukee series – the most in a three-game series since at least 1992. LSU has led the nation in strikeouts in the past two seasons.

Opponent Previews

  • Indiana: The Hoosiers are 1-3 this season, coming off a 32-24 season and a sixth-place finish in the Big Ten.
  • Notre Dame: The Irish are 2-1, with a 32-21 record last season and an 11th-place finish in the ACC.
  • UCF: The Knights are 3-1, having swept Siena before a close loss to Miami. They finished 29-26 last season and 13th in the Big 12.
