Paolo Banchero: Is the Orlando Magic’s Star Underperforming?
Back in 2022, the Orlando Magic hit the jackpot in the NBA draft lottery, securing Duke sensation Paolo Banchero as the focal point of their rebuilding efforts. While Banchero has demonstrated considerable promise early in his career, a former NBA champion is beginning to question whether he possesses the qualities to become the long-term franchise player the Magic need.
High Expectations, Disappointing Results?
Entering the current season, the Magic garnered significant attention from fans and analysts alike. A blockbuster summer trade brought Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies to Orlando, in exchange for a substantial package of assets. Bane’s elite shooting ability was expected to complement the dynamic duo of Banchero and Franz Wagner, providing a crucial offensive boost.
However, on February 18th, during ESPN’s “NBA Today,” Kendrick Perkins voiced his concerns about the Magic’s performance this season, labeling them as a major disappointment. He went even further, identifying Banchero as one of the most underwhelming players of 2026.
“I would go a step further and say Paolo Banchero has been the biggest disappointment player-wise,” Perkins stated. “We had high expectations for this young man coming into the season. We were discussing his potential to become a top-five player under 25. Instead, he’s taken three or four steps backward. I’m starting to question whether he is their franchise guy moving forward.”
Analyzing Banchero’s Stats
Perkins’ assessment isn’t simply based on opinion; the statistics support his claims. Through his first 43 games this season, Banchero’s production has shown a concerning downward trend. He’s still contributing solid numbers, averaging 21.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. However, his scoring output is the lowest it’s been since his rookie season, nearly four points below his 2025 average.
While his shooting efficiency remains consistent with his career averages (around 45% from the field), his shot attempts have decreased to 15.6 per game, matching his career low. For the Magic to have any chance of making a playoff push, Banchero needs to rediscover his All-Star form and lead the team.
Banchero on Wagner’s Injury
Following a recent practice, Banchero addressed the status of his teammate, Franz Wagner. He emphasized Wagner’s importance to the team but stressed the need for a full recovery before his return.
“He’s one of our key pieces, and we need him out there,” Banchero told reporters. “But at the same time, we don’t want him coming back before he’s ready… Just want him to take his time, no matter how long that is, and get all the way healthy because we don’t want him out there if he’s not feeling like himself.”
The future of the Orlando Magic hinges on Paolo Banchero’s ability to elevate his game. Can he silence the critics and become the franchise cornerstone the team envisioned? Only time will tell. You can find more NBA analysis at ESPN and NBA.com.
