Jon Cooper, Tom Wilson, and Team Canada’s Olympic Hockey Journey
The Olympic hockey tournament has been electrifying, and Team Canada is making waves. A significant part of that success story revolves around Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson and the strategic guidance of head coach Jon Cooper. Wilson has realized a childhood dream by earning a spot on Canada’s Olympic hockey team, and he’s not just participating – he’s thriving.
Wilson’s Dream Come True
Since earning his place on the roster, Wilson has played in every game for the red, black, and white, and has been prominently featured, skating on a top line alongside superstar Connor McDavid and the dynamic 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini. This is a remarkable opportunity for Wilson to learn from and contribute alongside some of the world’s best players.
McDavid’s Dominance
Connor McDavid, widely considered the best player in the world, entered the Olympics leading the NHL in points (96) and ranking second in goals (34). His accolades speak for themselves: five Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s leading scorer and three Hart Trophies as league MVP. The Edmonton Oilers’ captain has also led his team to two consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances. You can learn more about McDavid’s incredible career on the NHL website.
Wilson on Playing with McDavid and Celebrini
“Playing with Connor (McDavid) has been a highlight of my career, obviously,” Wilson shared after practice, as reported by TSN. “He’s such a great guy, such a quiet leader. I can learn so much from him… When we’re on the ice together, (I) just try and create as much space for them as I can.”
Wilson emphasized his commitment to his own game: “My mentality is I’m not going to change. I’m at this point in my career. You know, I depend on my work ethic. If I’m playing fast and physical, that’s when I’m at my best. If I get the puck to those guys, the rest will take care of itself. Those guys are so good that they’ll bring out the best of me. I mean, Connor, Macklin, two of the best players in the world. I just have to focus on executing my game, and it’ll be good.”
Olympic Performance
McDavid currently leads the Olympic tournament with 9 points (2 goals, 7 assists) in three games, while Celebrini is close behind with six points (4 goals, 2 assists), ranking him fourth. Wilson is also contributing significantly, recording a point-per-game with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in three games, including his first career Olympic goal.
Learning from the Best
Wilson is gaining invaluable insights from playing alongside these superstars. “It’s been so fun just to see that caliber of superstar player, the best in the world,” Wilson said. “For me, just to take that all in and see how quickly they make decisions, how good they are.” He also highlighted the dedication of players like Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Sidney Crosby, noting their consistent hard work and leadership.
Cooper’s Influence
Interestingly, Jon Cooper leaned on Spencer Carbery, the Capitals’ head coach, when deciding on Tom Wilson’s role for Team Canada, demonstrating the collaborative spirit within the hockey world. This strategic decision highlights Cooper’s commitment to maximizing the team’s potential.
Looking Ahead
Wilson, who leads the Capitals in both goals (23) and points (49) during the regular season, believes there are still levels to his game he can unlock with continued dedication. The Olympic experience is undoubtedly providing him with the motivation and knowledge to achieve that. Stay tuned to see how Team Canada, led by Cooper and fueled by the contributions of Wilson, McDavid, and Celebrini, continues their Olympic journey.
