Prime Minister Visits Terrebonne as By-Election Looms

Prime Minister Mark Carney made a stop in Terrebonne on February 17, 2022, to meet with Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste, whose previous election victory was invalidated by the Supreme Court. This visit comes as the riding prepares for an upcoming by-election.

Supreme Court Invalidation Sparks By-Election

Following the unveiling of Canada’s new industrial defence strategy in Montreal on Tuesday, Prime Minister Carney travelled to Terrebonne, located on the North Shore. The need for a by-election arose after the Supreme Court overturned the results of last spring’s federal election in the Terrebonne riding.

Bloc Québécois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné was initially declared defeated by a single vote in favour of Liberal Tatiana Auguste. However, the election result was challenged due to a misplaced Bloc Québécois ballot by Elections Canada.

Show of Support for Tatiana Auguste

During his visit, Prime Minister Carney met with Ms. Auguste. Upon entering a local restaurant, the pair were met with applause and cheers of “Tatiana!”. Earlier in the day, at a press conference in Montreal, Mr. Carney praised Ms. Auguste’s dedication to the community, stating, “She is still on the ground in Terrebonne, very engaged.”

Local Engagement and Election Timeline

Mr. Carney also spoke with Terrebonne Mayor Mathieu Traversy, who presented the Prime Minister with a jersey from the local hockey team. While the date for the Terrebonne by-election has not yet been announced, it must be held within six months of the seat becoming vacant.

Stay tuned for further updates on the Terrebonne by-election.
