Thunderation Roller Coaster: A Farewell to a Silver Dollar City Icon

Silver Dollar City is preparing to say goodbye to one of its original roller coasters. The beloved Thunderation, a runaway mile train coaster, will operate for its final season in 2026, concluding over three decades of thrilling rides. The Branson theme park announced the news on February 16th, with the final operation scheduled for January 2, 2027.

A Legacy of Thrills

Opened in 1993, Thunderation quickly became a cornerstone attraction at Silver Dollar City. Spanning an impressive 3,022 feet of track and reaching speeds of 48 mph, it was hailed as the park’s first true roller coaster. Over the years, this iconic ride has carried more than 27 million passengers, creating countless memories for visitors.

At its debut, Thunderation was recognized as the fastest mine train coaster available. The coaster’s unique construction involved steel track manufactured by Arrow Dynamics in Utah, combined with timbers sourced from Louisiana and Arkansas, showcasing a blend of engineering and regional craftsmanship.

What’s Next for the Mountain?

The space currently occupied by Thunderation will be reclaimed by the Marvel Cave Mining Company. According to a press release, the closure is intended to facilitate “geological surveys,” hinting at potential new discoveries within the mountain.

Jedidiah Campbell, foreman of the Marvel Cave Mining Company, stated, “Thunderation has had its run, but this mountain was never meant to be borrowed forever. There are still undiscovered sections of that mine and we intend to see what it holds.”

A Year-Long Celebration

Silver Dollar City is planning a year-long sendoff for the historic ride, beginning with an opening-day ceremony on March 13th. Throughout the season, the park will unveil special offers and events to honor Thunderation and its legacy. Fans of the roller coaster are encouraged to experience one last ride before it closes.
