Figure Skating Winter Olympics: A Games Filled with Drama
The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, have delivered a whirlwind of emotions for figure skating fans. From unexpected falls to brewing controversy, the ice has been a stage for both triumph and disappointment. A judging controversy has erupted, with accusations leveled against a French judge of favoring the home country in the ice dance final, potentially denying Team USA a well-deserved gold medal.
Ilia Malinin’s Shocking Performance
One of the biggest stories of the Games has been the performance of American skater Ilia Malinin. Considered a strong favorite for gold, Malinin finished eighth in the men’s free skate after a stunning series of falls. This outcome was particularly shocking given his dominant performances leading up to the Olympics.
Malinin himself revealed the mental pressure he faced before his routine. “I just had so many thoughts and memories flood right before I got into my starting pose, and almost, I think, it maybe overwhelmed me a little bit,” he told NBC Washington. “I’ve been through a lot in my life, a lot of bad and good experiences. So, I just feel like it’s the pressure of especially being that Olympic gold medal hopeful. It was just something I can’t control now.” He emphasized the unique pressure of the Olympic stage, stating, “They only understand that from the inside and going into this competition, especially today, I felt really confident, really good. But it really just went by so fast I did not have time to process.”.
A New Champion Emerges
While Malinin faltered, Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan seized the opportunity, winning gold with a total score of 291.58 – a personal best. His free skate score of 198.94 was also a career high. Yuma Kagiyama of Japan secured silver, and his teammate, Shun Sato, took home the bronze.
Malinin, who consistently scores in the 300s, finished with a total of 264.49, far below his personal best of 333.81. Despite his disappointment, he graciously congratulated Shaidorov on his victory.
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Malinin reflected on the past, noting that he believes he would have performed better had he been selected for the Beijing Olympics four years prior, when he was 17. His performance sparked widespread disappointment among Team USA fans and the broader figure skating community.
The 2026 Winter Olympics have undoubtedly been a memorable chapter in figure skating history, filled with unexpected twists, emotional moments, and the emergence of a new champion. For more in-depth sports coverage, visit Fox News Sports.
