Bickerstaff’s achievement is particularly poignant considering his father, Bernie Bickerstaff, coached nearly 1,000 NBA games but never led an All-Star team as head coach. “I rub it in his face all the time,” Bickerstaff joked, before adding a more serious note. “You realize that as long as he was in the NBA, nothing for us is guaranteed and nothing is promised. So, it’s one of those things where you cherish the opportunity to get where you are.”
Bickerstaff earned the honor after guiding the Pistons to the Eastern Conference’s best record through February 1st, marking his first All-Star selection and the first for a Pistons coach since 2006. He will coach the USA Star team in the new three-team format at the 2026 NBA All-Star Game in Inglewood, California.
Resilience and the Path to Success
Bickerstaff’s path wasn’t easy. He spent years as an assistant coach, waiting for his opportunity. “It was nine years before I participated with anybody in the playoffs. The first eight years of my career, we were done in March or April,” he recalled. He emphasized the importance of not taking opportunities for granted and learning from every experience, both positive and negative.
His journey included interim head coaching positions with the Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies, and Cleveland Cavaliers before finally landing the full-time role with the Pistons in June 2024. He credits his success to resilience, treating people with respect, and building strong relationships.

The Pistons’ success is not solely attributable to Bickerstaff’s coaching. The emergence of young stars like Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren has been crucial. Bickerstaff spoke highly of both players, acknowledging their dedication and growth.
“It’s awesome, man,” Bickerstaff said of having Cunningham and Duren selected for the All-Star Game. “I think about them a ton and what they went through the year before we got here. They could have easily been frustrated, but they stuck together, worked out together, and lifted each other up.”

Bickerstaff also reflected on the significance of Black History Month and the importance of representation in the NBA. He spoke about the challenges his father faced as a Black coach and the progress that has been made. “It’s a celebration of accomplishments of people who have knocked down barriers…people who have opened doors and created opportunities for all of us,” he stated.
As a father of biracial children, Bickerstaff is committed to teaching them about the beauty and challenges of being Black. He emphasizes the importance of pride in their heritage and understanding the historical context of their experiences.
