Farewell to Sunny: Remembering the Obama Family’s Beloved White House Companion
In a touching tribute shared on X (formerly Twitter), former US President Barack Obama announced the passing of Sunny, the family’s cherished Portuguese Water Dog. After 13 years of loyalty, laughter, and boundless energy, Sunny has left a void in the hearts of the Obama family.
“Yesterday, we lost a cherished member of our family,” Obama wrote, describing Sunny as a dog who was “pretty much perfect” and an unwavering companion through some of the most historic moments of their lives.
A Life of Boundless Energy and Joy
Sunny joined the Obama family in 2013 at the start of the President’s second term. From the moment she arrived, the family fell instantly in love with her spirited personality. Barack Obama recalled her boundless energy, noting how she would effortlessly leap over the hedges of the South Lawn as if they weren’t even there.
Beyond her athletic feats, Sunny was known for her endearing quirks. According to the former president, she was a “loud and sloppy drinker” who, ironically, absolutely hated getting wet. Her favourite activities included:
- n
- Running and rolling on the floor with the family.
- Receiving endless belly rubs.
- Following the White House staff around, “helping” them with their daily duties.
- Spending quality time with Sasha and Malia, even when she just wanted a nap.
From the White House to Global Diplomacy
Sunny wasn’t just a family pet; she was a White House celebrity. During her tenure at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, she met a diverse array of high-profile visitors, ranging from international dignitaries to Pope Francis.
Former Chief White House Photographer Pete Souza reflected on the honour of photographing Sunny, describing her as a “willing subject.” He noted that Sunny held the rare distinction of being petted by both a President and a Pope, cementing her place in the annals of presidential pet history.
Continuing a Presidential Tradition
The presence of pets in the White House is a long-standing American tradition, providing comfort and a sense of normalcy to presidents and their families. Sunny shared her time in the residence with Bo, another Portuguese Water Dog who joined the family in 2009 to help daughters Sasha and Malia settle in. Bo passed away in 2021, and Obama noted that Sunny is now reunited with her “big brother.”
Interestingly, the Obamas’ love for the Portuguese Water Dog highlights a preference for intelligent, active breeds that fit the energetic lifestyle of a presidential family. In contrast, Donald Trump is widely cited as the only president in the last century who did not keep a pet while in office.
A Lasting Legacy of Loyalty
For thirteen years, Sunny remained a beacon of sweetness and adventure. “Always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days,” Obama shared.
Sunny’s journey reminds us of the profound bond between humans and their pets—a bond that transcends politics and borders, bringing simple, pure joy to even the most stressful roles in the world.
