Healing Patients, Healing the Planet: Grifols and ENGIE Forge a Sustainable Future

In a decisive move toward environmental stewardship, Grifols, a global leader in the healthcare sector and a world reference in plasma-derived medicines, has announced a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with ENGIE. This partnership isn’t just a business deal; it’s a commitment to the planet, ensuring a steady flow of clean energy to power life-saving medical innovations.

The agreement outlines the acquisition of 40 GWh of renewable energy annually over the next decade. Spanning from 2027 to 2037, this strategic alliance significantly boosts Grifols’ green energy portfolio, allowing the company to cover 66% of its electricity demand in Spain through renewable sources.

Powering Innovation with Solar and Wind Energy

The energy supplied under this agreement will be generated from new state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar and wind assets located across Spain. By transitioning to these clean sources, Grifols expects to achieve a staggering reduction in its carbon footprint, avoiding approximately 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year.

According to Daniel Fleta, Chief Industrial Services Officer at Grifols, this initiative is a cornerstone of their decarbonization strategy. By investing in new wind and solar plants, Grifols is not only securing a predictable energy supply but also actively strengthening Spain’s electrical grid and accelerating the national energy transition.

The Roadmap to Net-Zero 2050

This partnership is a vital piece of a much larger puzzle. Grifols has set ambitious sustainability targets to ensure the health of future generations:

  • By 2030: Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% (based on 2022 levels).
  • By 2030: Achieve 100% renewable electricity consumption across all operations.
  • By 2050: Reach full net-zero emissions.

A New Era of Sustainable Production: The Lliçà de Vall Plant

Beyond energy procurement, Grifols is redefining how healthcare facilities operate. The company is currently developing a new production plant in Lliçà de Vall, designed to be a beacon of sustainability. This facility will feature:

  • 100% Renewable Energy: Powering every aspect of its operations with green electricity.
  • Smart Resource Management: A highly digitalized campus implementing intelligent metering to optimize water and energy use.
  • Circular Economy: Rigorous application of circular practices to ensure materials are reused and waste is minimized throughout their lifecycle.

Scheduled to begin construction this year and become operational by 2030, this plant represents the tangible execution of the Grifols Sustainability Plan 2025-2027.

Global Recognition for Excellence in ESG

The industry is taking notice. Grifols’ commitment to the environment is reflected in its prestigious accolades. In the EcoVadis 2025 rankings, the company earned the Platinum distinction, scoring 86 out of 100. Furthermore, the company continues to be recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices as one of the most sustainable biotechnology companies globally.

By aligning industrial growth with ecological responsibility, Grifols is proving that the path to medical excellence is paved with sustainable energy. For more information on global energy transitions, you can explore the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports on renewable integration.
