Piton de la Fournaise Eruption: A Volcanic Spectacle Unfolds
The Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, is currently erupting, captivating onlookers and prompting safety measures on Réunion Island. This latest eruption, which began on February 13th, has drawn attention globally, with stunning visuals circulating online.
The ‘Daft Punk of Eruptions’ and Safety First
One individual, known online as ‘Kevin,’ has become a viral sensation for his incredibly close-up footage of the lava flow. Dubbed the “Daft Punk of eruptions,” Kevin films himself just meters from the molten rock. However, he stresses the importance of safety, emphasizing that he is fully equipped with a fire-resistant suit, helmet, gas mask, specialized shoes, and gloves. “I feel more unsafe riding a motorcycle on the road than near the lava in these conditions,” he states. He urges the public: “Do not go near the eruption. If you wish to observe, visit the Piton de Bert viewpoint. The Laves road is also beginning to offer impressive views, particularly near Tremblet.”
Important Safety Notice: The prefecture has triggered alert level 2.1 of the ORSEC plan. Access to the enclos (enclosure) is strictly prohibited. The prefecture warns: “The prefect triggers ORSEC volcanic alert level 2.1: eruption within the enclosure. Stay cautious. Access to the enclosure is strictly forbidden.”
Lava Flow Updates
As of February 15th, 2026, the lava flow has reached the Grandes Pentes and is approaching the RN2 national road, currently situated 2.2km away. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
