Cypress Mountain Rescue: Snowboarder Saved in Dramatic Operation

Dramatic Rescue on Cypress Mountain Saves Snowboarder

Vancouver, BC – February 13, 2026 – North Shore Rescue (NSR) successfully completed a challenging rescue operation on Cypress Mountain Tuesday afternoon, saving a snowboarder who became stranded in steep and slippery conditions. The hours-long rescue highlights the importance of preparedness and caution while enjoying winter sports.

The Incident and Rescue Details

According to a social media post by NSR, the snowboarder initially fell into a tree well after removing her snowboard. Search Manager Allan McMordie explained to 1130 NewsRadio that friends initially attempted to assist her, but she subsequently slid approximately 100 metres down the slope and became trapped under a tree root.

Cypress Ski Patrol responded to the initial call for help and quickly requested assistance from NSR. A rescuer rappelled down to the snowboarder’s location and brought her safely up to the ski hill, where ski patrol transported her to the parking lot on a sled. Fortunately, the snowboarder stopped just short of a particularly dangerous drop-off, potentially avoiding a more serious injury.

Winter Sports Safety Concerns

This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with winter sports. Data from B.C.’s Provincial Health Services Authority reveals 369 hospitalizations related to snowboarding and skiing between 2020 and 2021. Tragically, the BC Coroner’s Service reports approximately 10 fatalities annually in the province due to skiing or snowboarding-related incidents. McMordie emphasized the need for caution, especially with a busy long weekend approaching. He strongly advises visitors to ski hills to wear micro spikes on their boots to improve traction on potentially icy surfaces hidden beneath fresh snow.
