Monza Madness: Toto Wolff Points Finger at Verstappen After Qualifying Drama

The Italian Grand Prix qualifying session at Monza delivered one of the biggest shocks in recent Formula 1 history, but the headlines aren’t just about the leaderboard. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has openly criticized Max Verstappen, claiming the Red Bull driver cost George Russell a certain pole position.

While the paddock was stunned by Pierre Gasly’s unexpected pole for Alpine, the tension between Mercedes and Red Bull reached a boiling point during the final moments of the qualifying run.

The Controversial “Tow” Tactic

At a high-speed temple like Monza, the “tow” (slipstreaming) is essential for a blistering lap. Mercedes had a strategic plan: they placed championship leader Kimi Antonelli in front of George Russell to provide the necessary draft. This was a calculated move, as Antonelli was already facing grid penalties for exceeding his engine-part allowance and was destined to start from the back regardless.

However, the plan was disrupted by Max Verstappen. According to Toto Wolff, Verstappen’s positioning in the closing stages of the lap compromised Russell’s momentum.

“Yeah, I think at the end where he got done over by Max in the final run when launching the lap,” Wolff stated. “It was just much too close, and that compromised the lap time eventually and that lost pole position.”

Russell’s Perspective: “Max Just Slammed on the Brakes”

George Russell, who had been the favourite for pole, expressed his frustration regarding the encounter at the Parabolica corner. Russell explained that Verstappen’s attempt to find a tow of his own created a “mess” on track.

  • The Incident: Verstappen slowed down significantly to avoid being the lead car.
  • The Impact: Russell found himself too close to the cars ahead, negatively impacting his aerodynamic performance.
  • The Result: Despite a strong effort, Russell’s time was narrowly beaten by a surging Pierre Gasly.

“In hindsight, probably would have been better off not trying this, but we wanted to give it everything,” Russell admitted, though he remains optimistic about his chances for Sunday’s race.

Verstappen’s Struggle: The “Kangaroo” Car

While Wolff and Russell focused on the tactical battle, Max Verstappen had his own set of problems. The four-time world champion described his car’s behaviour as erratic, comparing it to a “kangaroo” due to ride control failures.

Verstappen noted that the car was jumping excessively over bumps and kerbs, costing him precious tenths of a second in low-speed sections. Despite these issues, Verstappen qualified sixth but will move up to fifth following a grid penalty handed to Oscar Piastri for impeding.

Looking Ahead to the Italian Grand Prix

With the grid set and tensions high, all eyes are on the race. Russell is determined to close the 59-point gap to Antonelli, stating that a clean start and a top-four position in the opening laps will be key to fighting for victory.
