Tournoi Pee-Wee Québec: Where Hockey Legends Begin

Since its inception in the early 1960s, the Tournoi International de Hockey Pee-Wee de Québec has become a cornerstone of youth hockey, and a remarkable predictor of future NHL success. An astounding 1502 players who graced the ice at this tournament have gone on to play in the National Hockey League – roughly twenty per edition. This makes the Tournoi Pee-Wee Québec not just a tournament, but a proving ground for hockey’s elite.

A Legacy of NHL Talent

The very first player to make the leap from the Tournoi Pee-Wee Québec to the NHL was defenseman Brad Park, who debuted with the New York Rangers in 1968. More recently, the spotlight shines on Macklin Celebrini, currently making waves with Team Canada at the Olympics. The tournament’s track record speaks for itself.

“Looking at the number of teams we host, some definitely stand out. But 1502… when you think about it, that’s a significant number,” stated Patrick Dom, the event’s General Manager, during a special edition of JiC. “We have fans who specifically scout these young players, hoping to say, ‘I saw that player and now they’re in the NHL.’ That’s what some fans are here for.” added Julie Hamel, Associate General Manager.

Iconic Players & This Year’s Attractions

Quebec hockey fans have enjoyed witnessing the early careers of hockey icons over the decades. Legends like Guy Lafleur, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Patrick Roy, and Brett Hull all competed in the Tournoi Pee-Wee Québec. The tournament has consistently showcased exceptional talent.

This year’s event promises to be equally exciting, with appearances from NHL alumni and current stars including Joe Thornton, Jonathan Marchessault, Mike Matheson, Max Pacioretty, Maxime Talbot, Alexandre Carrier, David Savard, Ed Belfour, and José Théodore. Fans will have the opportunity to see these hockey heroes up close and personal.
