Common App’s Direct-Admissions Boom: Opening New Doors to Higher Education

Applying to college has traditionally been a stressful journey of uncertainty, where students send out applications and wait anxiously for a response. However, a significant shift is happening in the landscape of higher education. Through the Common App, the dream of a college degree is becoming more accessible and less intimidating for thousands of prospective students.

What is the Common App Direct-Admissions Program?

In a bold move to democratize access to education, the Common App has expanded its innovative direct-admissions program. Starting this September, 234 colleges across 42 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., are proactively reaching out to students with admissions offers before the students even apply.

This program specifically targets students who often face the steepest barriers to entry, including:

Breaking Barriers and Expanding Horizons

The impact of this initiative is already evident. Last year, over half of the 1.5 million Common App applicants received at least one direct admission offer. But the real victory lies in the discovery of new opportunities: 25% of these students applied to a college they had never previously considered.

“The direct-admissions program helps expose students to colleges that may not otherwise be on their radar,” says Jenny Rickard, CEO of Common App. She emphasizes that the goal is to provide students with the “confidence and security that they are welcome and wanted on college campuses.”

Rising Trends in College Applications

Despite a 10% dip in international applications, the overall domestic applicant pool is surging. For the 2025–26 cycle, nearly 32,000 more students submitted applications compared to the previous year. This growth is particularly strong among domestic students from marginalized backgrounds, signaling a renewed push toward educational equity in the US.
