Tumbler Ridge Vigil: A Community in Mourning
The small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, is reeling after a devastating school shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday. The incident claimed the lives of five students and one teacher, leaving a community shattered and grappling with unimaginable grief. Amidst the tragedy, the focus remains on the survivors, particularly 12-year-old Maya Gebala, who is currently fighting for her life at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
Maya Gebala’s Fight for Survival
Maya Gebala went to school on Tuesday expecting a normal day of learning and friendship. Instead, she became a victim of the horrific violence. Her aunt, Krysta Hunt, shared with Global News that Maya is in “extreme critical condition” after undergoing surgery to address a brain bleed. The prognosis remains uncertain as doctors monitor her response to treatment.
“They’re trying to push the family, all of us, to make a decision, but right now we’re not ready for that,” Hunt stated, revealing the immense emotional toll on the family. Doctors initially feared Maya wouldn’t survive the night, but she has shown resilience, and the family is hoping for improvement over the next few days.
Maya sustained two gunshot wounds: one above her left eye and another in her neck. Doctors are currently focusing on addressing the head injury, deferring treatment for the neck wound to prioritize her immediate survival. Hunt described Maya as a “beautiful girl who is outgoing and loves life,” highlighting her passion for hockey and sports, and her strong, feisty spirit.
Heroic Actions and Community Support
In a testament to her bravery, Maya reportedly attempted to lock the library door to protect other students from the shooter before being shot while hiding under a table. Her friends are being hailed as heroes for noticing her finger move after the shooting and carrying her to safety to seek help. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Maya’s mother and family with expenses during this incredibly difficult time.
Victims Identified and Shooter Details
One of the students killed in the shooting has been identified as Abel Mwansa Jr. A female teacher was also among the victims. Tragically, the shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, also claimed the lives of his mother and stepbrother at their home before turning the gun on himself at the school. The RCMP confirmed Van Rootselaar died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ongoing Investigation and Support
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The community of Tumbler Ridge is coming together to support one another during this time of profound loss and grief. Resources are available for those affected by the tragedy, and mental health support is crucial in the days and weeks to come.
