The Champions Return: Inter Milan Ready for Serie A Opening Clash
The wait is finally over for football fans in Italy and around the globe. Inter Milan, the reigning masters of Italian football, are set to begin their journey to defend the Scudetto. The stage is the iconic San Siro, where they host the ambitious newcomers, Monza, in a highly anticipated season opener.
Coming off a dominant campaign where they secured a historic Domestic Double—winning both the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia—Inter enters this match as the clear favorites. However, the opening game is always a test of rhythm and nerves.
Birthday Magic and Transfer Whispers: The Lautaro Factor
All eyes will be on captain Lautaro Martinez. In a poetic twist, the Argentine striker starts the match on his birthday. While the celebration is in the air, the atmosphere is tinged with speculation, as persistent rumours link the star forward with a potential move to FC Barcelona.
Despite the noise, Martinez leads the line alongside Francesco Pio Esposito, looking to prove why he remains one of the most lethal strikers in Europe.
Inter Milan: Squad Depth and Tactical Shifts
Inter’s squad sees a few notable changes for this encounter. While Henrikh Mkhitaryan is sidelined due to suspension, and new arrivals Djed Spence and Curtis Jones are present only to greet the fans, the tactical focus shifts to the wings. Interestingly, John Stones—who impressed in pre-season—starts on the bench, leaving Andy Diouf to take charge of the right flank.
Monza: The Newcomers’ Challenge
Monza arrives at the San Siro with a different identity. Having fought their way through the promotion play-offs, the club has undergone a significant transformation under the leadership of new head coach Ivan Juric.
Despite a convincing 3-0 win over Avellino in the Coppa Italia, Monza is grappling with a significant injury crisis. They will be without key players including Matteo Pessina and Patrick Ciurria. Furthermore, suspension woes have stripped them of Dany Mota Carvalho and goalkeeper Demba Thiam, forcing Juric to rely on the form of Gustavo Varela to lead the attack.
Confirmed Lineups
Here is how both teams are expected to line up for this Serie A showdown:
- Inter Milan: J. Martinez; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Diouf, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Dimarco; Esposito, Lautaro Martinez.
- Monza: Pizzignacco; Kouadio, Lucchesi, Carboni; Birindelli, Foe Ondoa, Mout, Mangas; Colpani, Bakoune; Varela.
