Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse – A New Era for the Iconic Series
The world of Castlevania is about to welcome a thrilling new chapter! Evil Empire, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Dead Cells, in collaboration with Motion Twin, is developing Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a brand-new 2D action platformer. This announcement marks a significant moment for fans, as it represents a return to original Castlevania content after years of crossovers and retro re-releases.
From DLC to Full-Fledged Adventure
The seeds of this project were sown with the incredibly popular Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC in 2023. This collaboration proved the developers’ ability to capture the essence of the Castlevania universe, paving the way for a full-scale game. While Konami has been revitalizing other franchises like Silent Hill and Metal Gear, Castlevania fans have eagerly awaited a new mainline entry.
A New Belmont Takes the Stage
Set in 1499 Paris, Belmont’s Curse unfolds not long after the events of the acclaimed Netflix Castlevania series. Players will embody the successor to Trevor Belmont, wielding a whip and battling the forces of darkness. Speculation is rife that the protagonist is the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, hinted at by her distinctive red hair.
Gameplay and Development Details
Motion Twin is contributing in an advisory role, while Evil Empire leads the development, building upon their experience with Dead Cells. The game is described as a “2D exploration action game,” which translates to a “Metroidvania” or “Igavania” experience – a style popularized by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Expect dynamic combat utilizing the whip for traversal and attacks. The initial reveal showcases the use of a Sword, offering a balance of ease of use and power. More weapons and abilities are promised, requiring strategic planning and skillful utilization to save Paris from impending doom.
A Legacy Continues
Koji Igarashi, the long-time producer of Castlevania, departed Konami in 2014 to create Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a spiritual successor to the series. Now, with both Bloodstained’s sequel and Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse slated for release this year, fans are in for a treat. This marks a renaissance for the genre and a thrilling time to be a Castlevania enthusiast.
