Kike Hernandez Back in Dodger Blue: A Familiar Face Returns
Andrew Simon Kiké Hernández has announced his return to the Los Angeles Dodgers via Instagram, exclaiming, “3 in a row has a nice ring to it!” This marks his 10th season donning Dodger Blue (13th overall in his MLB career), and he’s eager to add to his already impressive legacy with the team.
A Three-Time World Series Champion
Hernández’s return is particularly exciting for Dodgers fans, as he’s a proven winner. He secured his third World Series title – and third with the Dodgers – in 2025, adding to championship runs in 2020 and 2024. His contributions extend beyond just being present; he’s a key component of the team’s success.
A Journey Through the Majors
Hernández’s journey with the Dodgers began with a six-player trade with the Miami Marlins in December 2014. He spent his initial stint with the team from 2015-2020 before moving to the Boston Red Sox for 2 1/2 seasons. A mid-season trade in 2023 brought him back to Los Angeles, and he’s consistently chosen to return, re-signing with the Dodgers after both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
Numbers and Versatility
Throughout his 920 regular-season games in Dodger blue (and 92 postseason appearances), Hernández has proven his value. While his 2025 regular season numbers – .203/.255/.366 with a 72 OPS+ – might not jump off the page, his impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. He’s a master of versatility, having started games at first base, second base, third base, left field, and center field. Remarkably, he even took the mound five times as a pitcher!
Clutch Performances in the Postseason
Hernández truly shines when the stakes are highest. He started every game for manager Dave Roberts during the 2025 postseason, making 17 starts across multiple positions (13 in left field, two at third base, and two in center field). His postseason numbers (.250/.290/.359) demonstrate his ability to rise to the occasion. He delivered key moments, including back-to-back multi-hit games in the NL Wild Card Series against the Reds, a crucial two-run double in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Phillies, and a game-saving double play in left field during Game 6 of the World Series against the Blue Jays.
From Draft Pick to Veteran Leader
A native of Puerto Rico, Hernández was originally drafted by the Houston Astros in the sixth round of the 2009 Draft. Over his 12-year career, he’s also played for the Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, and Boston Red Sox. He’s consistently demonstrated his defensive prowess, starting over 100 games at second base, third base, shortstop, and center field.
Kike Hernandez continues to be a valuable asset to the Dodgers, bringing a unique blend of versatility, experience, and clutch performance to the team. His return is a testament to his dedication and the strong connection he has with the organization and its fans.
