Why Connor Bedard Isn’t on Canada’s Olympic Men’s Hockey Roster
Connor Bedard is undeniably one of the most exciting young talents in the world of hockey. Despite his exceptional skill and rising star power, the Chicago Blackhawks’ centre won’t be suiting up for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This decision, while not a complete oversight, has surprised many hockey fans.
At just 20 years old, Bedard was the first overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, having previously shone with the Regina Pats. This season, he’s demonstrated his offensive prowess, racking up 23 goals and 30 assists in 44 games for the Blackhawks. Yet, despite his impressive stats, he was passed over for a spot on the Canadian Olympic team, even after a couple of injuries opened potential roster spaces.
The Reasoning Behind the Decision
The primary reason for Bedard’s omission appears to be a preference for veteran experience. Team Canada opted for players with proven track records in high-pressure international competitions. While Bedard’s potential is immense, the coaching staff seemingly prioritized players who could reliably contribute in various roles.
It’s also worth noting that Bedard’s skillset currently leans heavily towards offense. He isn’t necessarily suited to a bottom-six role, which often requires a more well-rounded game. Players like Nick Suzuki, who can contribute offensively and defensively, and play multiple positions (including wing), were favoured for their versatility.

Bedard wasn’t the only notable player initially left off the roster. Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers also faced a snub, but was later added as an injury replacement after Anthony Cirelli was forced to withdraw. These decisions highlight the difficult choices facing Team Canada’s selectors.
