Remembering Jim Toman: The Legacy of an NC State Star and College Baseball Legend

The college baseball community is mourning the loss of a true icon. Jim Toman, a former standout player for NC State and a seasoned coach with over 30 years of experience, has passed away at the age of 64. After a courageous and hard-fought battle with glioblastoma, Toman left behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and an unwavering passion for the game.

A Record-Breaking Start at NC State

Long before he was shaping the careers of young athletes, Jim Toman was a force to be reckoned with on the field. A Pennsylvania native, Toman played for NC State from 1981 to 1984, where his natural leadership earned him the role of team captain during his junior and senior years.

His 1984 season remains a gold standard in the program’s history. During the ACC tournament, Toman set extraordinary records that still echo today, including:

  • Home Runs: 4
  • Doubles: 4
  • Total Bases: 25

A Journey Through the Dugouts: From Assistant to Head Coach

Toman’s transition from player to mentor was seamless. He began his coaching odyssey at the high school level before stepping into the collegiate arena as an assistant at Florida International University. His journey then took him back to his roots at NC State and eventually to South Carolina, where he worked under the legendary coach Ray Tanner.

His leadership capabilities soon propelled him to head coaching positions:

  • Liberty University (2008-2017): In nine seasons leading the Flames, Toman steered the program to two NCAA tournament appearances.
  • Middle Tennessee State University (2019-2022): After a brief stint at the College of Charleston, Toman led the Blue Raiders program until his retirement in 2022.

A Lasting Impact and a Heartfelt Farewell

Beyond the wins and losses, Jim Toman was respected for his character and his ability to build winning foundations. Ray Tanner, who won two national championships at South Carolina, shared a poignant tribute to his former player and colleague.

“I coached you at N.C. State… I knew you were destined for great things. Together, we built on the foundation. Even though you weren’t in the dugout when it happened, we don’t win back-to-back national championships without you,” Tanner recalled. “We will miss you, Jim, but we will never forget you.”

Jim Toman’s life was a testament to resilience—both in the face of a grueling illness and in the pursuit of athletic excellence. His influence will continue to be felt in every diamond where his former players and students continue to play the game he loved so dearly.
