In Loving Memory of Joyce S. Nichols: A Journey of Adventure and Grace (1937–2026)

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Joyce S. Nichols. On August 2, 2026, Joyce passed away at the age of 88 at Briarwood Village in Coldwater, OH, following a courageous battle with complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Joyce was more than just a beloved matriarch; she was a woman of insatiable curiosity, a lifelong learner, and a spirit that refused to be bound by borders. Born on December 15, 1937, in Somerset, Ohio, to the late Russell W. and Louise H. Snider, Joyce spent her 88 years weaving a tapestry of love and adventure that touched countless lives.

A Legacy of Love and Family

Family was the cornerstone of Joyce’s world. She is survived by her devoted husband, John Nicols II of Tucson, AZ, and her son, Michael Lilie (and his wife Leslie Stuart) of Altamont, NY. Her warmth and wisdom lived on through her sister, Doris Marbough of Coldwater, OH, and her two cherished grandchildren, Erin Lilie-Fisher and Russell Lilie.

Though she was preceded in death by her parents and several siblings—Annabelle Dowdy, Russell Snider Jr., Helen Fetters, Phyllis Dupler, Lois Snider, Carl Snider, and Dean Snider—the bond she shared with her family remained an unbreakable thread throughout her life.

An Insatiable Wanderlust

If there is one word to describe Joyce, it was explorer. A graduate of the Celina High School class of 1955, Joyce’s professional life was diverse, but her true passion was the world beyond her doorstep. Her passport was a testament to her adventurous soul, having ventured across the globe to experience the beauty of diverse cultures.

Her travels took her to breathtaking destinations, including:

  • Across the Oceans: China, Japan, Australia, and various European countries.
  • Exotic Landscapes: Africa, Tahiti, and Costa Rica.
  • The Americas: Almost every state in the U.S., the Caribbean Islands, and a special love for the Canadian landscapes, including the Canadian Rockies and Nova Scotia.

Passions and Pursuits

Beyond her travels, Joyce embraced life with elegance and intellectual vigor. She found joy in the discipline of dressage, the precision of golf, and the quiet sanctuary of a good book. Whether she was hiking through nature, solving complex puzzles, or enjoying a competitive game of pinochle, Joyce approached every activity with enthusiasm and grace.

Honouring Her Final Journey

Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the vibrant life of Joyce S. Nichols. The memorial services will be held as follows:

  • Graveside Service: Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Zion Ridge Cemetery, Thornville, OH.
  • Celebration of Life: Following the service, a gathering will be held at the Clay Haus Restaurant, 123 W. Main Street, Somerset, OH, starting at 12:00 pm.
