Reclaiming Childhood: How Guardians of the Children Empowers Young Survivors

At first glance, they might seem intimidating—leather jackets, roaring engines, and a tough exterior. But behind the motorcycles of Guardians of the Children lies a deeply compassionate mission: helping children heal from the scars of abuse and providing them with the strength to reclaim their lives.

More Than Just a Motorcycle Club

Contrary to stereotypes, this is not a traditional biking club. It is a dedicated motorcycle-based advocacy group. “We specialize in working with kids that have suffered any type of abuse, and working with their families to help them through a tough time,” explains Geezer, a volunteer who uses his road name to maintain the necessary safety and privacy of the organization’s operations.

The group’s impact goes far beyond friendship. These volunteers dedicate their time to:

    n

  • Taking children on exciting motorcycle rides to bring joy back into their lives.
  • Organizing fun activities that allow kids to be kids again.
  • Providing a powerful physical presence in court, standing beside children as they face their abusers.

The ultimate goal is empowerment. When a child has been victimized, the Guardians step in to help them reclaim their power, teaching them how to stand up for themselves and ensuring they never have to face their trauma alone.

Breaking the Silence on Child Abuse

Another core pillar of the organization is public education. Toaster, another dedicated volunteer, emphasizes that silence is the greatest enemy of recovery. “The reality of child abuse in our society is, it’s there,” Toaster notes. “Not a lot of people want to talk about it because it is a hard thing to discuss. I don’t think we do society, or the children in society, any benefit by ignoring it.”

By bringing awareness to the issue, Guardians of the Children helps create a safer environment where victims feel seen, heard, and supported. For more information on how to identify and prevent child abuse, resources like the UNICEF Canada provide critical guidelines and support systems.

A Growing Network of Hope Across North America

Founded in Texas 20 years ago, the organization has expanded its reach across the United States and Canada. This includes a strong presence in the Steinbach/Winnipeg area. With nearly 7,000 volunteers across North America, the group continues to grow.

Interestingly, the “tough biker” persona is a strategic choice. Geezer explains that the image actually helps children feel safe and secure. The excitement of seeing the bikes arrive often breaks the ice, transforming a fearful child into an excited one.

Join the Cause: Upcoming Events and Impact

The organization relies on community support to provide essential services, including counselling for children and their families. Every cent raised stays within the local community to ensure direct impact.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

  • Empower the Children Charity Ride: August 15. Starting at Deacons Corner with kickstands up at 11 a.m.
  • Sundown Gymkhana: August 28-30. A family-friendly event featuring horses and a Cowboy Church service on Sunday.

Real Stories, Real Transformation

The true measure of success for the Guardians is seeing a child thrive. Toaster recalls seeing families move from a state of desperation to being healthy and capable of facing life again. Geezer shares a heart-wrenching success story of a withdrawn student who, after working with the group, became a “joy to have in class” according to their teacher.

When these children reclaim their confidence and their smile, the volunteers find their greatest reward. It is a testament to the fact that with the right support, healing is not just possible—it is inevitable.
